ATLANTA — MARTA has temporarily rerouted its Rapid A-Line bus through Summerhill starting Wednesday night ahead of a Red Bull Showrun Formula 1 exhibition planned on Hank Aaron Drive this weekend.
Atlanta News First reported that the continuous detour runs from 9 p.m. Wednesday until 6 p.m. Sunday. The agency urged riders to allow extra time and follow posted signs for temporary stops. An updated detour notice from MARTA, quoted in that coverage, said road-closure revisions for the Showrun forced a change to the Rapid A-Line path for the full multi-day window.
What is closed — and what still moves
The detour affects the Convocation Center, Summerhill, and Ormond Street stops on Hank Aaron Drive, per Atlanta News First. Some Rapid A-Line stations along Hank Aaron between Fulton and Ormond were already closed for ongoing construction; MARTA had been dropping passengers at nearby regular stops even before the Showrun overlay.
According to Red Bull’s event information summarized in the local report, the exhibition is planned for Hank Aaron Drive and Fulton Street in Summerhill from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, with the run corridor described from Fulton to Georgia Avenue. Neighbors and riders should treat Friday load-in and Sunday teardown as part of the disruption envelope even if the loudest engines are a two-hour Saturday block.
Neighborhood reaction
Organized Neighbors of Summerhill president John Helton told Atlanta News First that Red Bull has assured the community it will document road conditions before and after and restore the street to its prior condition — a commitment residents said they intend to enforce with city leverage if needed.
Helton also described the detour as a “hiccup” in getting the rapid bus fully settled for people who depend on it, and said some neighbors will have to change plans and travel farther to reach daily destinations. That friction is familiar wherever special events borrow arterial streets from transit-first corridors.
Transit and city coordination
At a July 23 MARTA Board Committee meeting cited by Atlanta News First, MARTA Deputy General Manager Rhonda Allen said the agency was notifying the city Department of Transportation about impacts and asking the city to consider assurances and compensation if delays and reroute costs exceed what has been anticipated, including construction delay on the corridor.
Red Bull is expected to clean skid marks; Helton said he was also told the company would help with neighborhood trash pickup after the show. Those operational details matter as much as the spectacle for a southside corridor that already balances stadium traffic, BeltLine growth, and bus priority projects.
