ALPHARETTA — North Point Mall’s next chapter just cleared a planning desk, not a groundbreaking.
WSB-TV reported Monday that Alpharetta’s Planning Commission approved, on a narrow 4-3 vote, redevelopment plans for the mall’s 100-acre site. The proposal, led by Jamestown developers, would turn the property into a large mixed-use project with hotels, apartments, retail, restaurants, a music venue, and a 20,000-seat hockey arena. The package now goes to the full Alpharetta City Council for a final vote scheduled two weeks after the Planning Commission action.
Why hockey is in the pitch
Developers are openly tying the arena concept to a future NHL expansion conversation. Metro Atlanta has lost two NHL franchises before — the Flames to Calgary and the Thrashers to Winnipeg — and WSB noted North Point is one of two proposed metro arena concepts positioning for a possible expansion team. That is ambition on a slide deck, not a league announcement. The Planning Commission vote is a land-use and design milestone, not an NHL award letter.
Jamestown chief investment officer Tim Perry told the station the location’s access package is the strategic case: major roads, two highway exits, a future express-lane exit, and a MARTA stop. Perry also framed the vote as potentially among the largest economic-impact decisions in Alpharetta’s history — language that belongs in the political record of the hearing, not as an independent economic forecast.

WSB’s report included resident reaction that is more measured than the renderings. Shane Orfus supported redeveloping the aging mall and expected a property-value lift, but questioned whether another mixed-use template would feel distinctive rather than “cookie-cutter.” That tension — yes to reuse, questions on character and traffic — is the predictable public-comment pattern for mall-to-district conversions across the northern suburbs.

- Any zoning, traffic, fiscal, or financing conditions council attaches.
- Separate tracks for arena tenancy, league talks, and private capital that sit outside the planning vote.
- Coordination with state and transit access projects already named in the developer pitch.
A 4-3 planning vote is a green light to keep arguing, not a shovel in the ground. Drivers who use North Point Parkway, GA-400, and the mall ring roads should treat construction phasing, if approved, as a multi-year story — not a single ribbon-cutting weekend.
