ATLANTA — A collision between a CSX freight train and a tractor-trailer early Friday morning sent shockwaves through Southwest Atlanta, leaving a trail of charred debris, scattered mail packages, and triggering the temporary suspension of MARTA’s main south rail lines.

The collision occurred at approximately 3:45 a.m. near the intersection of Lee Street SW and Sparks Street SW, adjacent to MARTA’s elevated tracks between the West End and Oakland City stations.

According to Atlanta Police and fire rescue personnel, a CSX freight locomotive struck the cabin of the semi-truck as it crossed the tracks, dragging the vehicle nearly 500 feet before coming to a stop. The impact ruptured the truck’s fuel tanks, causing the cab and trailer to catch fire.

A Fiery Impact and Scattered Cargo

Firefighters arrived to find the semi-truck fully engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke rising near the MARTA line. Fortunately, the train crew escaped without injury. However, the driver of the tractor-trailer fled or was missing from the scene prior to emergency services arriving, prompting an active search by local police.

The force of the collision tore open the truck’s trailer, scattering hundreds of packages—which appeared to be Amazon customer orders—along the CSX right-of-way. Crews spent hours clearing cardboard boxes and sorting through debris.

“Our priority was containing the fire to prevent any threat to the MARTA elevated guideway above. We are fortunate that the train crew is safe, but we are actively looking for the driver who seems to have abandoned the vehicle.”

MARTA Operations Disrupted

Because the crash occurred directly beneath MARTA’s elevated rail infrastructure, transit officials immediately suspended rail operations on the Red and Gold lines between West End and Oakland City stations as a safety precaution.

To keep commuters moving during the Friday morning rush hour, MARTA established a bus bridge to shuttle passengers around the closed section. Normal rail operations were restored around 8:30 a.m. after MARTA structural engineers inspected the concrete supports and determined no structural damage had occurred.

Second Train Crash in 24 Hours

The Southwest Atlanta wreck marks the second high-profile collision between a train and a tractor-trailer in the metro area in less than 24 hours.

On Thursday afternoon, a CSX train struck a semi-truck that had become stuck on the tracks near Highway 29 and Bishop Road in Fairburn. In that incident, the driver managed to jump out of the truck cab seconds before the impact, which pushed the truck into a nearby utility pole and caused a brief electrical fire. One passenger on the train suffered minor injuries.

CSX representatives issued a statement reminding drivers of the extreme dangers of crossing tracks when signals are active and urging drivers to use the emergency phone numbers posted at every crossing if their vehicle becomes disabled.

An investigation into the cause of Friday’s collision and the whereabouts of the semi-truck driver is ongoing.
