ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves closed a four-game home set against the Washington Nationals the way division leaders prefer to finish weekends: with a clean Sunday win and a full series sweep.
According to the Associated Press recap carried on ESPN, Mike Yastrzemski homered and drove in two runs, Matt Olson also went deep, and Atlanta beat Washington 4–2 on Aug. 2 at Truist Park. The AP account described it as Atlanta’s first four-game sweep since winning four at the Nationals in September 2025, and the first time Washington had been swept in a four-game series all season — and the first time ever in Atlanta.
CBS Sports’ gametracker board listed the same final and carried standings snapshots near Braves 67–45 and Nationals 55–58 after the loss. League schedule pages had shown Sunday’s first pitch at 1:35 p.m. ET, completing a set that opened Thursday and included Friday’s 6–2 Atlanta win behind Bryce Elder.
How Sunday unfolded
The AP game story, again via ESPN, traced Washington’s two-run fourth to a bases-loaded sequence against Atlanta right-hander JR Ritchie, who had been recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett. Ritchie issued a walk and hit Andrés Chaparro on the helmet with a pitch that forced in a run; James Wood’s sacrifice fly accounted for the second Nationals run in the frame. Chaparro finished the inning before Brady House replaced him and made his first career appearance at first base, per the same recap.
Atlanta answered with the long ball. MLB.com posted highlight packages of Yastrzemski’s solo homer and Olson’s solo shot off Washington starter Cade Cavalli. Field Level Media’s summary noted Olson’s production and Yastrzemski’s later RBI work, including a seventh-inning sacrifice fly that scored Mauricio Dubón after Dubón singled to open the frame.
The AP account credited a fifth-inning sequence in which Austin Riley doubled and Jim Jarvis grounded to shortstop CJ Abrams, whose high throw sailed past House for an error that allowed Riley to score and put Atlanta ahead 3–2. Cavalli was charged with three runs, two earned, in six innings and fell to 8–5 in the published line. Dylan Dodd (3–1) threw a scoreless inning in relief of Ritchie, and Raisel Iglesias finished the ninth for his 24th save, according to the AP/ESPN write-up.
Roster notes around the series finale
Before first pitch, the Nationals scratched first baseman Luis García Jr., who had been the subject of trade speculation; García remained in the dugout, and Chaparro started in his place, the AP reported. Atlanta, meanwhile, placed right-hander Reynaldo López on the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation and recalled Ritchie for the start.
Those moves sat on top of a series already defined by Washington’s skid. The AP said the Nationals had lost five straight entering or including Sunday’s result, while Atlanta used the weekend to pad a National League East lead that midseason scoreboards had already shown with a healthy cushion over much of the pack.
What it means next
Braves: Atlanta was off Monday. The AP “up next” note listed left-hander Chris Sale (12–6, 2.08 ERA) as the scheduled starter for Tuesday night’s home opener of a set against Miami.
Nationals: Manager Blake Butera indicated plans for a bullpen game Monday at Philadelphia unless a trade changed the plan, with no opener announced at the time of the AP story.
For Atlanta fans, the weekend stack is straightforward:
- Four straight wins against a division opponent at Truist Park
- Homers from Yastrzemski and Olson in the finale after earlier series contributions from the same middle of the order
- A bullpen that again closed a one-run or two-run lead without surrendering the night
