FLOWERY BRANCH — Atlanta Falcons training camp has turned into an unexpected showcase for an undrafted rookie while the quarterback room works through injuries, roster churn, and a heavy personal loss on the coaching staff.
ESPN Falcons reporter Marc Raimondi’s continually updated camp file said Friday that Jack Strand, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound product of Division II Minnesota State–Moorhead, has taken the majority of 11-on-11 reps with Tua Tagovailoa (tight back) and Michael Penix Jr. (right knee) not fully cleared. On Friday, Strand was 7-of-8 passing in those team periods and completed his first six throws.
What teammates are saying
Tagovailoa, speaking to reporters in the ESPN account, praised Strand’s ability to take headset information and get it to the offense — something he said is uncommon for rookies, especially at quarterback — and added that Strand “can sling the ball.” That endorsement matters less as a depth-chart coronation than as a temperature check: the room is watching the rookie handle real reps without the usual veteran safety net fully available.
Penix is still working back from a torn ACL and has been limited relative to full team periods. ESPN’s Thursday notes said he did not throw on a scheduled rest day; Friday’s red-zone 7-on-7 period was rough (1-of-7 with a near interception by cornerback A.J. Terrell, per Raimondi). Those are camp snapshots, not projections about Week 1.

- Tagovailoa’s tight back kept him out of team sessions early, though he returned Thursday for some individual throws while remaining out of 11-on-11s.
- The club released Trevor Siemian with an injury settlement as camp opened.
- Atlanta signed veteran Cooper Rush on short notice Wednesday; Rush arrived from the Dallas area Tuesday night and was on the field Wednesday backing up Strand in live team work.
