The Atlanta Falcons signed veteran safety Logan Ryan to a one-year contract on Sunday, the team announced.
Ryan, 33, played last season for the San Francisco 49ers, appearing in 14 games with three starts. The Rutgers product has played 11 NFL seasons with the New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans, New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and 49ers.
“Logan is a smart, physical player who has been a leader everywhere he’s been,” Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot said. “He’s going to be a great fit in our secondary.”
Ryan is expected to compete for the starting safety spot alongside Jessie Bates III. The Falcons have been looking for a complementary veteran presence in the secondary after letting veteran safety Jaylinn Hawkins leave in free agency.
The signing does not preclude the Falcons from drafting a safety early in next year’s draft. Atlanta holds all of its own draft picks for the first time in several years.
Ryan is the team’s third notable defensive signing this offseason, joining edge rusher Shaquil Barrett and cornerback Tre Flowers. The Falcons open training camp July 31 at IBM Performance Field in Flowery Branch.
