If you can’t score a ticket to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Decatur has the next best thing.
The city’s downtown square has been transformed into an open-air World Cup viewing destination called WatchFest ‘26, featuring large-format screens broadcasting every televised match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup through July 19.
The event, organized by the Decatur Downtown Development Authority in partnership with local restaurants and sponsors, launched on June 11 and has quickly become one of the most popular community-level watch-party destinations in metro Atlanta.
What to expect
WatchFest runs daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (or later on match nights) and includes:
- Two giant LED screens mounted on the courthouse lawn, visible from the entire square
- A rotating lineup of food trucks featuring tacos, barbecue, empanadas, jerk chicken, and other global street food
- A beer garden operated by Three Taverns Brewery, with draft pours and cocktails from local distillers
- A kids’ zone with face painting, soccer inflatables, and mini-pitch pickup games
- Live music between matches on Friday and Saturday evenings
Admission is free. Food and drinks are pay-as-you-go.
Getting there
WatchFest is centered on Decatur Square, steps from the Decatur MARTA station on the Blue line. Organizers strongly encourage transit or ride-share; downtown Decatur parking is limited and fills quickly on match days.
Bike parking is available on the north side of the square near the Decatur Library.
Why it works
Decatur has long been one of metro Atlanta’s most walkable small cities, and WatchFest leans into that identity. The event brings together the kind of crowd that makes the town square special on any weekend — young families, couples, retirees, groups of friends — and adds the unifying energy of global sport.
“We wanted something that felt like a neighborhood party, not a corporate event. The square is perfect for that.”
— Decatur Downtown Development Authority organizer
Local businesses say the foot traffic has been a welcome boost. Restaurants and shops surrounding the square report 15 to 20 percent increases in sales on match days compared with the same days last year.
Key dates remaining
While WatchFest broadcasts every match, the biggest remaining events for Atlanta-area fans include:
- Round of 32 match in Atlanta — date TBD based on group-stage results
- Round of 16 match in Atlanta — mid-July
- Semifinal in Atlanta — July 15 (the marquee event)
- Final — July 19 (broadcast only, played in New York/New Jersey)
WatchFest will screen them all.
