One of Atlanta’s most anticipated summer traditions is back — and this year’s celebration promises to be the biggest yet.
The 14th Annual Juneteenth Atlanta Parade and Music Festival will take over Piedmont Park from June 19 through June 21, offering three full days of parades, live music, health and wellness programming and community activities that honor the history and culture of Black Americans.
The event has grown steadily since its founding in 2013, and organizers say this year’s edition is shaping up to be one of the largest Juneteenth celebrations in the Southeast.
What Is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved people that the Civil War had ended and they were free — more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday became a federal holiday in 2021 and has been celebrated in Black communities across the country for more than 150 years.
In Atlanta, a city with deep roots in the civil rights movement, the day carries particular resonance.
“Juneteenth is about freedom, but it’s also about resilience and joy,” a festival organizer said. “This event is our way of bringing the whole community together to celebrate both.”
Three Days of Programming
The festival spans the full weekend with a packed lineup of events:
Thursday, June 19 — Juneteenth Day
- Juneteenth Parade — the signature event, featuring marching bands, dance troupes, community organizations, elected officials and cultural floats winding through Midtown before arriving at Piedmont Park.
- Opening ceremony — remarks from local leaders and a keynote address focused on the holiday’s significance.
- Live music — performances on multiple stages throughout the afternoon and evening.
Friday, June 20 — Community and Wellness Day
- Health and wellness fair — free screenings, fitness demonstrations and mental health resources provided by local healthcare organizations.
- Vendor marketplace — Black-owned businesses showcasing food, art, fashion and handmade goods.
- Youth programming — interactive workshops, storytelling sessions and activities designed for children and teenagers.
Saturday, June 21 — Music Festival
- All-day concert — a curated lineup of local and regional artists spanning R&B, gospel, hip-hop and jazz.
- Food festival — an expanded selection of food vendors highlighting Southern cuisine, Caribbean flavors and African-inspired dishes.
- Community awards — recognition of individuals and organizations making an impact in Atlanta’s Black community.
A Growing Tradition
What began as a modest neighborhood gathering has evolved into one of Atlanta’s signature cultural events. Organizers say attendance has climbed year over year, with last year’s festival drawing tens of thousands of visitors to Piedmont Park across the three-day weekend.
The growth reflects a broader national trend. Since Juneteenth became a federal holiday, cities across the United States have expanded their celebrations, and corporate sponsorship of Juneteenth events has increased significantly.
In Atlanta, the festival has become a point of civic pride.
“People fly in for this,” a returning attendee said during last year’s event. “It’s not just a local thing anymore. It’s a destination.”
