For more than four decades, the Sweet Auburn Springfest has drawn hundreds of thousands of visitors to one of the most historically significant corridors in the American South. This May, it’s back — and organizers say this year’s celebration will be the biggest yet.
The 42nd annual Sweet Auburn Springfest is set for May 9–10, 2026, returning to the heart of Atlanta’s historic Sweet Auburn district. The two-day multicultural street festival remains the city’s longest-running event of its kind, and this year’s edition promises an expanded lineup of live music, local art, food, and community programming.
A District Steeped in History
Sweet Auburn is far more than a festival backdrop. The corridor along Auburn Avenue was once called “the richest Negro street in the world” by Fortune magazine in 1956. It is the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., home to Ebenezer Baptist Church, and the historic center of Black commerce and culture in Atlanta.
The Springfest was founded in 1984 by civil rights leader Hosea Williams to spotlight that legacy — and to bring together Atlanta’s increasingly diverse communities for a weekend of shared celebration. More than four decades later, the mission remains the same, even as the festival has grown from a modest neighborhood gathering into one of the Southeast’s premier cultural events.
What to Expect This Year
Organizers have outlined an ambitious program for the anniversary weekend:
- Live Music Stages: Multiple stages will feature performances spanning R&B, hip-hop, gospel, jazz, Afrobeat, and Latin genres. A headline act is expected to be announced in April.
- Vendor Marketplace: More than 200 vendors are anticipated, offering handmade goods, clothing, jewelry, art prints, and specialty items from local and regional artisans.
- Food Court: The festival’s legendary food row will feature everything from classic Southern soul food to Caribbean, West African, and Mexican cuisine. Vegetarian and vegan options will be expanded this year.
- Kids’ Zone: A dedicated family area will include bounce houses, face painting, interactive art stations, and youth performances.
- Art Walk: A curated outdoor gallery will showcase works by emerging and established Atlanta-area artists, with several pieces available for purchase.
- Community Health Fair: Free health screenings, wellness resources, and community organization booths will be set up along the eastern end of the festival grounds.
Logistics and Getting There
The festival runs along Auburn Avenue between Courtland Street and the King Historic District. Admission is free, though VIP packages with reserved seating and food credits will be available for purchase through the Springfest website starting in April.
Organizers strongly encourage attendees to use MARTA — the King Memorial station on the Blue and Green lines is a short walk from the festival entrance. Limited street parking will be available, and several paid parking decks near downtown are within walking distance.
Road closures along Auburn Avenue and surrounding side streets are expected to begin early Saturday morning. WACN 21 will provide live traffic updates throughout the weekend.
A Celebration Worth the Wait
Sweet Auburn Springfest has survived recessions, a pandemic, and the ever-shifting landscape of Atlanta development. Its longevity is a testament to the community that sustains it — and to the enduring cultural gravity of the district itself.
Whether you’ve attended all 40 editions or this will be your first, the 2026 Springfest is shaping up to be a weekend worth marking on the calendar.
The 40th annual Sweet Auburn Springfest takes place May 9–10, 2026, along Auburn Avenue in Atlanta. Admission is free. For more information, visit the Sweet Auburn Springfest website.
